Notes on D1 and D2 games.
Mars vs. Moon
6:15PM @ North Allegheny
Regular season: Mars 13 Moon 3 April 4th
Mars has gone on a bit of a revenge tour since losing to their D1 equivalent, Pine Richland (elite face off play, smaller goalie, multiple scoring weapons). The Fighting Planets have outscored opponents 59-6 in their last three games. Moon must find a way to counter the Mars face off unit. The longer the game remains close the tighter Mars could become giving Moon a chance to pull off the upset.
Quaker Valley vs. Hampton
8:15PM @ North Allegheny
Regular season: scrimmage
Hampton roughed up Quaker Valley in a preseason scrimmage but have since suffered a key midfield injury. The Talbots’ defense has stiffened, albeit against weaker competition, after allowing 12 goals to Pine Richland, 12 goals to Fox Chapel, and 21 goals to Mars. An improving defense combined with an attack unit of Dante DiBucci, Richy Myros, and Isaac Capezzuti presents quite the challenge for Quaker Valley.
Shady Side vs. North Allegheny
6PM @ Seneca Valley
Regular season: Shady Side 5 North Allegheny 4 April 21
Both of these teams have struggled to score goals as of late while also holding the opposition in check. Unfortunately for both clubs, the opposition of late has featured out of area teams at the MSLCA tournament. Jack Kairys (NA) versus Clayton Krol (SSA) is the match up of the semifinals. Dan Usaj (SSA) would have gotten our vote for coach of the year considering all the injuries they’ve suffered and still managed to win the section.
Mt. Lebanon vs. Pine Richland
8PM @ Seneca Valley
Regular season: Mt. Lebanon 19 Pine Richland 11 May 2
The D1 night cap doesn’t look that appealing considering the thumping Lebo delivered a few weeks ago, not to mention what Lebo’s offense just did to Fox Chapel in the quarterfinals. But, Pine also played extremely well in their quarter final match up against USC. How do you beat Mt. Lebanon? Assuming you don’t have attackmen who can run by their poles, hope your secondary scorers win their match ups which means producing against their short stick middies. Problem there is one of their short stick middies is often Brian Ward and the other, David Harvey, is also an outside linebacker with D1 football offers. Mt. Lebanon’s defense was without starting goalie Matt Kelly for the Fox Chapel game due to injury. Back up goalie Jake Sharp should see a few more shots than he did against the Foxes assuming he’s back in net. Really excited for the Adam Reimer Nick Tomassi match up. Pine has been freeing Reimer using a pick on the wing. Curious to see how Lebo’s off ball defense handle this offensive tactic.
Mars over Moon by 7 – Planets come up with too many face off wins, geting the ball to too many offensive weapons
Hampton over Quaker Valley by 3 – Geoff Magin face off prowess will keep the score tight
Mt. Lebanon over Pine by 4 – Pine cleans up their play a bit to keep the game closer than the first meeting
North Allegheny over Shady Side by 1 – Upset pick to make things interesting, more confidence in athleticism of North Allegheny secondary players
