Three mortal locks.
Pittsburgh awarded ten All Americans in 2015 which is entirely too many for a region with only forty seven high school programs. All American awards are predicated on the number of schools participating in the sport. Doesn’t mean the area actually has ten kids worthy of All American status. You especially don’t want to conduct a “Where are they now” feature on previous Pittsburgh AAs. We wouldn’t award more than six AAs.
But, after a relatively down class, the 2016s are loaded and there are already a couple D1 commits in the 2017 class who will be truly deserving of the top honor.
Here’s a list of three easy choices and few members for the watch list.
Automatic 2016 AA
Brian Ward – 2016 – Middie – Mt. Lebanon – Yale commit
Levi McCrady – 2016 – Middie – Fox Chapel – Brown commit
Calvin Sargent – 2017 – Attack – Moon – Cleveland State commit
Nick Tommasi – 2016 – Defense – Mt. Lebanon – Providence commit
Cian Malcom – 2017 – Attack/Middie – Chartiers Valley
Dan Lee – 2016 – Attack – Mt. Lebanon – Ithaca commit
Max Jaffe – 2016 – attackman – Shady Side – Ohio Wesleyan
Doc Szlachetka – 2016 – Defense – Shady Side – Air Force*
Doc has been the best pole in Pittsburgh over the last two seasons and would be a mortal lock for AA had he not injured his knee this fall. Doc at 70% might still be good enough to win AA this spring.
**When you commit after sophomore year of high school, you tend to stop making highlight tapes.
